about eli
Eli Fahrenkrug received his B.S. in Chemistry from the Evergreen State College in 2011. His fascination with electrochemistry and materials science started while he was an engineer at Hummingbird Scientific. There he helped develop some of the first tools that would allow researchers to visualize electrochemical reactions at the atomic scale. He was hooked. He channeled those interests into research at the University of Michigan where he earned his PhD in 2016. There he helped pioneer a new electrochemical strategy for growing semiconductor crystals at liquid metal electrodes. Mixing science with a bit of wanderlust, Eli ventured to China to serve as a visiting scientist at the Institute of Semiconductors at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Beyond the lab he also found refuge for his interest in brewing chemistry by helping construct one of the world’s highest (in elevation) microbreweries on the Tibetan Plateau. He joined the faculty at Colorado College as Assistant Professor in the Fall of 2017. Eli has held 30+ jobs in his life (ask him about the worst!); he moonlights as a wedding officiant (8 and counting); he loves to travel, cook Sichuan food, hike with his dog Pizza, read magical realism, see live music, and enjoys any activity involving Types 2 and 3 fun. He’s currently half way into his goal of skiing Colorado’s 14ers.

Cathy joined the group in 2022 and works on the crystals project.
Delia Freliech 23′. Delia is an Environmental Science with a Chemistry Emphasis major from Wilton, CT. She enjoys her time on the CC Women’s lacrosse team and has been learning German. She is currently learning to solve a Rubik’s cube through instruction from her lab mate, Piper.
Delia joined the group in 2022 and works on the PFAS sensor project.
Will Zagrodzky 23′. Will is a Biochemistry major from Austin, Texas. He enjoys mountain biking, fly fishing, and playing basketball. He also happens to be a legally ordained minister, so if anyone needs a last-minute wedding officiated, he’s your guy.
Will joined the group in 2022 and works on the crystals project.
Sammy Ries 23′. Sammy is a Chemistry major from St. Paul, MN. She enjoys rock climbing, cooking, and exploring Colorado Springs in her free time. Sammy recently started volunteering in an emergency room where she has been enjoying assisting patients and observing all the fascinating things the ER has to offer.
Sammy joined the group in 2022 and works on the PFAS sensor project.
Ian Huelsbeck 23′. Ian is an Atlanta, GA native and is learning how to unicycle in his spare time. He enjoys speedrunning and is currently #2 in the world for Mercanaries. He also likes building cars and spending time outside. Peppercorn (the cat) enjoys running water, looking out of the window, and yelling when she wants.
Ian joined the group in 2022 and works on the PFAS sensor project.
Piper Catlin 23′. Piper grew up in Boulder, CO and enjoys running, hiking, and hanging out with kids. This summer she learned how to solve a Rubik’s cube and juggle with the best.
Piper joined the group in 2022 and works on the PFAS sensor project.
Rowan Kinney 23′.
Rowan joined the group in 2019 and works on the PFAS sensor project.
Pizza the dog has been an honorary member of the lab since 2018. He enjoys running water, deep powder, peanut butter, and barkour.
